The body runs on energy; think of it as our currency. Just as you can’t buy something without enough money, our body can’t perform its various functions without enough energy. It all starts with our cells’—specifically our mitochondria’s—ability to produce energy (who remembers ‘the mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell’?). 

When you imagine the body—from cells communicating, to food digesting, to hair growing—as a system of energy exchanges, it’s easier to understand. When we have a surplus of energy and transactions are being made, all of our systems are working optimally. But when we don't produce enough energy for every transaction, our body has to pick and choose where to spend it, and ultimately everything begins to slow down. 

Just as we might charge things to our credit card that we can’t afford, our body runs on a credit system as well– except instead of borrowing money it borrows energy from less vital functions to keep us alive, putting us into an energy debt. The longer you stay in debt, the harder it becomes to get out of that state, and the longer you are in a state of energy depletion, the more likely you are to become sick and experience undesirable symptoms.
