Top 5 Ozone Therapy Myths Debunked

Ozone therapy is gaining popularity in the alternative health world for its wide range of therapeutic applications and undeniable benefits, the most remarkable being its mitochondrial-strengthening and anti-inflammatory effects. Ozone (O3) is a powerful oxidizing agent that works primarily through stimulating energy flow in the blood. Despite positive evidence from the scientific community, ozone therapy has remained the subject of many myths and misconceptions, which has fueled the skepticism surrounding it.

Here are the top misconceptions about ozone therapy debunked.

Myth #1: ozone therapy is dangerous.

Ozone has acquired a bad rap because of the association with the environmental pollutant ozone, also known as smog. However, medical ozone is different than ozone pollution. The ozone that is used therapeutically is created from medical-grade oxygen in special ozonator machines.

Ozone therapy is relatively non-invasive (depending on which method you choose) and it is considered safe with minimal side effects when used in controlled doses. Due to the skepticism surrounding ozone's safety, it has not caught on as quickly in the U.S. as it has in other countries. Its validity as a treatment appears not to be a topic of debate in other areas of the world. In fact, ozone therapy is readily available and accepted as an effective treatment in many countries including Germany, Italy, Russia, Spain, China, and Mexico.

Myth #2: there is no research on ozone therapy.

It is believed that ozone therapy is a new health fad with no scientific evidence supporting its legitimacy. This could not be further from the truth!

There are thousands of scientific studies published supporting the use of ozone for a wide variety of conditions. Ozone excels at treating cutaneous conditions such as wound-healing, dermatitis, psoriasis and eczema, among others, due to its anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-viral properties, as well as its ability to restore skin-microbiome. In fact, ozone was used during WWI to treat soldiers' bacterial infections.

Scientific studies in support of ozone are not limited to cutaneous conditions. There is positive evidence demonstrating ozone as an effective treatment for viral infections such as Covid-19. Ozonated oil was found to be an effective therapy for pain management in osteoarthritic patients. There is even promising research on ozone as a treatment and/or preventative for oral conditions such as gingivitis and dental carries

Myth #3: ozone is a new treatment.

As stated in the previous section, ozone was used successfully during WWI, so it is certainly not a new treatment. In fact, the earliest records of ozone therapy date back to the mid 1800s

Ozone's healing capabilities have been recognized for well over a century. There was even a book published in 1929 by directors of the top hospitals in the U.S. which lists 114 diseases treatable by ozone therapy.

Myth #4: ozone therapy is only for cancer patients.

Maybe you read that ozone therapy can offer relief for chronic illnesses and you think you need to be sick to receive the benefits of ozone. The truth is that ozone offers a multitude of benefits, even if you are not sick!

If you want to boost your immune system, fight off viruses and bacteria, decrease inflammation, increase energy throughout the day, improve cardiovascular function, improve respiratory function, or just increase your overall wellbeing, then ozone therapy may be for you!

Myth #5: the benefits of ozone are short-lived.

The immediate benefits of ozone last for several hours, but ozone strengthens your cells over time, providing long-lasting benefits. This is because ozone is a regenerative treatment, meaning it activates your body's innate healing capabilities.

Ozone stimulates preconditioning (PC), which is a response originating in the blood that spreads throughout the body. PC is comprised of two aspects: the immediate effect of the stressor (in this case, the oxidation of ozone), and then the protective counter-response of the blood to neutralize the effect.

The impact of ozone PC is increased energy output, increased blood flow, and an outpouring of enzymes and antioxidants which offer body-wide protection. The protective effects of ozone PC can last several days.

Ozone is an incredibly powerful therapeutic tool that offers a wide range of health benefits. The misconceptions about ozone have created skepticism, yet research has shown that ozone is a safe and effective treatment option. The future of ozone therapy looks bright as research on ozone as both a stand-alone and integrative therapy continues to grow.
